Kristina & Jeff
We’re standing in the alley behind the Bourgeois Pig when Kristina and Jeff stop in their tracks to stare at us.
“You guys watch Saturday Night Live?! Why didn’t you tell us earlier?!”
Thus begins an animated discussion of one of the single greatest television shows ever. The devastation of Vanessa Bayer leaving after this last season. How Jeff and Kristina saw Taran Killam in person while on a trip to Colorado. The incredulity of how anyone could say that this show, nay, that Lorne Michaels himself, isn’t genius.
This, in a perfect nutshell, sums up the Jeff and Kristina wedding experience: honest, full of laughter and love, entirely unique, and with a dash of pop culture mixed in to keep things interesting.
A number of years ago I worked in the video store at Liberty Hall, which is when I initially met Jeff and Kristina (they were regulars during my weekend closing shifts), so it came as no surprise how many little details of their wedding highlighted their shared love of movies and shows. The morning of the wedding at Images Salon, Kristina laughs with her bridesmaids about whether or not Jeff will be wearing his Star Wars socks to walk down the aisle. A small Deathly Hallows charm hangs from one end of her white lace garter (“I had to get Harry Potter in this wedding somehow!”). She shows Jeff’s ring to the group and explains the inscription: “It says “Adventure time.” We meet up with the rest of the wedding party at the loft above 715, which incidentally is also full of old movie posters.
Kristina and Jeff really had the perfect downtown Lawrence wedding. Our day with the couple took us from Potter Lake for wedding party photos to 715 for pre-ceremony drinks, down Massachusetts St. to the space above Sarah’s Fabrics for the ceremony, and finally to the Lawrence Arts Center which had been beautifully transformed into a reception space full of sunlight, vibrant flowers, and a dessert table covered in pies and donuts from Mama Meg over at Ladybird Diner. After the toasts we walked down the alley behind the Pig to take photos in front of the ivy wall at Henry’s, before heading back to the Arts Center for a dance party emceed by none other than local favorite, DJ Candlepants (Curtis McCoy). It couldn’t have been more LFK.
Lawrence is a magical town, and really the best backdrop for such a special day for these two. This is where it all began, back in middle school when Kristina first had a huge crush on Jeff (ah, the things that are revealed during toasts). We had such a blast photographing this wedding, and there’s really only one thing left to say:
We have a great show for you tonight – Jeff Carmody and Kristina Tirol-Carmody are here – so stick around, and we’ll be right back!
